In 2023, the government introduced the Annual Health and Welfare Review, which includes a fully funded yearly vet visit. During this visit, cattle and sheep farmers can get customised health and welfare advice and test for endemic diseases with a vet of their choice.

New funding has been announced in England to tackle endemic diseases in livestock. By reducing the levels of disease, farm productivity can be increased alongside wider benefits, such as reducing greenhouse gas emissions and slowing antimicrobial resistance.

This additional funding will be available in summer 2024, beginning with sheep, and beef cattle, and expanding to dairy farmers soon after.

New financial support available in England

The UK government are offering additional financial support to:

  • Eradicate Bovine Viral Diarrhea (BVD) in cattle.
  • Address various health conditions in sheep.
  • Bolt on yearly vet visits – Annual Health and Welfare Review.

Current financial offers:

  • £522 for a beef cattle review.
  • £436 for a sheep review.

Additional funding includes:

  • £215 for beef cattle with no BVD.
  • £837 for beef cattle with BVD present in the herd.
  • £639 for sheep.

This additional funding will help with more in-depth disease testing and provide advice on eliminating diseases from the farm.

For sheep, farmers will choose from a range of health improvement packages with their vet, targeting the most prevalent conditions in their own flock.

Eligible farmers will also receive funding for a biosecurity assessment and tailored advice on preventing disease spread within their herd or flock and across their farm.

How to access the funding

First, you need to have an Annual Health and Welfare Review. After the review, you can access the extra support.

To sign up for a review, you need:

  • A single business identifier (SBI) linked to a county parish holding number (CPH) registered in England.

And:

  • 11 or more beef cattle.
  • 21 or more sheep.

This will allow you to apply for a three-year agreement to carry out the review annually, with an option to take up the extra funding offer.

How Herdwatch can help with movement records:

Register OFF movements in seconds by simply tapping on the animals you plan to move. Herdwatch will notify CTS instantly and you will be compliant.

Register ON movements by simply scanning the barcode on the animal passport using the smart bar-code scanner in the Herdwatch app. This will notify BCMS and pull down all the animal details for you automatically.

Correct Data Sent Promptly compliance is a critical part of a Beef enterprise, therefore it is critical that the correct movement data is sent on time and in a format that is acceptable to BCMS. Herdwatch can do this for you.

Report Death of a Registered Animal simply pick the animal that died and send that to BCMS through Herdwatch. You then have 7 days to return the animal’s passport to BCMS.
